LIke many I was incesnsed with the claims of the media re Klasss hissy fit... I wrote this this morning to get it off my chest and know I am preaching to the converted here but for my own sanity I had to share it... ROLE MODELS WANTED- APPLY WITHIN! The truth behind the reason we have them and us is because as we evolved as a species, the greedy and the most aggressive humans grabbed large swathes of land and thereby gradually increased their fortune. They needed the peasants kept in their place who would farm the land for them and look after their every selfish need and so in turn these land grabbers, the bourgeoise (the self appointed ruling classes) created the proletariat who owned nothing and whose only value was their labour. They were made to feel grateful for every scrap the upper classes deigned to give them and had to doff their caps to in recognition of these favours!!!! As time progressed the lower classes knew the workhouse and a miserable slow death awaited them if they were unable to work for whatever reason whilst the often cruel landowners and factory owners (as we moved into the industrial age) grew more wealthy from the fat of the land and cheap child labour, with little or no regard for their well being…Religion and politics have controlled that staus quo for centuries. However thanks to our strength of spirit alongside striving for justice and the formation of the Labour party, we have acquired many rights, but it has been a hard fought for battle and we still have some way to go. We cannot and should not let anyone or anything steal those achievements from us, we owe it to all those champions of social justice and those who died fighting for them. We are currently witnessing an alarming erosion of these rights and that is why so many people are campaigning to save our NHS, uphold our welfare state and stop the punishment of the most vulnerable... We do it on behalf of them and we need those who are strong and able to join us to guarantee a favourable future for the next generations ...I think it must still be in the DNA of those who are ancestors of the privileged and wealthy landowners, who have continued to lead cossetted, self-absorbed lives along with a warped sense of entitlement. Unfortunately we suffer the consequences of that in our unfair society, where people are regarded as nothing more than cannon fodder or factory fodder to be exploited, living on poor wages or not cared for when they have served their country or when they become unemployed, old, sick or disabled. What really worries me just as much, are the ordinary working class people who have had some meteoric rise to fame and celebrityhood because they had a bit of luck and find themselves at the top of the food chain, who then proceed to look down on those beneath them. They suddenly find a voice or are given an audience in order to have a tantrum because they may have to pay a little more tax out of their absolute wealth, in order to ensure we have an NHS and welfare state. In fact that payment may be no more that the cost of a designer handbag or a meal out at a posh restaurant. These people absolutely sicken me, some of them have so much money they cannot spend it so have to find ways of hiding it away, usually as far away as possible. But of course they cannot hide their mansions or can they? Consequently today I was accused of being a socialist with envy. Far from it in my long and varied career I was dedicated to helping working class, beautiful bright children to reach their potential and have aspirations, ensuring they had a concept of their own self-worth and self-belief in their abilities, no matter what their status or background. Just as important I did not teach them to trample on others in their ambitions or to lose all their compassion for those less fortunate, or indeed, that to be considered successful in life you need to acquire great riches... Yes this is what really worries me that we have encouraged a culture of egotistical people who seem devoid of all empathy because of their obscene greed and sadly they are powerful role models to our most impressionable young citizens. I am not asking for a revolution I am asking for an evolution of thought and attitude. Thankfully I have found many like-minded people whom I have had the privilege to debate these matters with and actually meet some who have become good friends and I am grateful for that. Together we can make a difference, indeed it is individuals and the small groups of caring people with a social conscience who always have. Suzi 18th November 2014
