LONG POST WARNING! I received an email from my Dad today and I had to share it with you, especially my Sydney Swans supports and all football lovers: Hi Darling, I have been thinking all night about how gutted you feel. Don Lane took me to a South Sydney game many years ago and there were about forty fans sitting there in one group. He knew them all and greeted them with the statement How many goals do you think we will lose by today. I was amazed and asked him why he supported such a losing team. His answer is something you and your mother should think about. He said supporting a team is like a marriage, You are in for the long haul. In sickness and in health till death do us part. I though about this last night. The Swans were in the finals they cant be classified as losers. They lost their way in the dazzle of publicity which turned their heads away from why they were there and what they had to do. Hubris was their sin. Look it up it means Arrogance and big headedness Im quite sure you are right about fans dropping out, but what sort of fans are they that only support a winning team. The team needs you more now than they did before. Before they were surrounded by adoring thrill seekers who were basking in the brilliant light of continued victory. Now comes reality time and the time to rebuild and look towards next season. Your team needs you now as it needs your mother.
