LORD, HELP! Lord, we need your help. And we need it now. Our nation is sharply divided. Ethnicity and religion have beclouded our vision of a better nation. With war ravaging the North East, the other ethnic nationalities look on with disinterest. We judge candidates, not by their skill and experience but by where they come from and which place of worship they go on Friday or on Sunday. We analyze issues as we see them from the prisms of our faith and tribe. The unbiased umpires are few and are immediately labeled as traitors or idealists or both. Added to the ethnic and religious struggles is the season of anomie evident daily in our national polity. How can anyone justify the sacking of a speaker in Ekiti? Or the statement credited to the Oba of Lagos that PDP could never win Lagos state? How can we serve people on the blood of the citizens with reports of deaths at APC primaries or hold on to the empty security promises of a President that has lost its hold on the nation? Lord, you did not make a mistake creating this country. More than being a mere geographical expression, this nation has a prominent place in your divine plan. It is a land of the nobles and a home to men and women of distinctions. Should I have a choice of another country, I would still choose this nation. A nation bubbling with hopes but stifled by her distractions. A nation of huge potentials, waiting for a leader to harness. A ship content with being in the harbour when the boisterous winds of change and growth beckon. Am I being too idealistic, Lord? Or, have I lost it somewhere? Is 57 years of existence taking its toll? Do I need to see a psychiatrist? I am persuaded that those who are fanning the embers of religion and ethnicity are the ones who need help. No nation sharply divided along ethnic and religious faux lines have become great. And a nation without strong institutions like ours, where anything goes, is going nowhere. Lord, please help! Otherwise, send me the phone numbers of good psychiatrists I can consult. I am waiting on you.
