CRIME RATE IS NOW REDUCED TO 15 PERCENT IN LUNSAR-SAYS LUC MAX A KANU By Hassan Bruz Northern Bureau Chief There is now a sigh of relief in the minds of the inhabitants of Lunsar especially Business People who are now at liberty to go about their programmes without undue hindrance. This is the statement of the Local Unit Commander at the Lunsar Police Station-Superintendent Max A Kanu popularly known as ‘ECOMOG’. He was responding to questions in an interview with the Sierra Leone News Agency [SLENA] on the Security situation in his area of Superintendence. ‘ECOMOG’ assumed office in Lunsar on 12th November 2013, at a time when there was almost a total breakdown of law and order in that part of the country. The inhabitants of Lunsar in the Marampa Chiefdom which doubles as host community to two mining companies , were subjected to regular harassments in the hands of criminals. The town was lawless to a level wherein defenceless people could be attacked at will by rubbers even in broad day light. The situation was much more conflicting between the Land Owners themselves who were almost always at each other’s throat over the Chairmanship of their Association, while the Youths remained aggressively divided on Political Party Lines. Sources say the leadership of the Police was unable to intervene well and proper because of what appeared to be its indebtedness to certain Factions in one way or the other. It has often resulted to a series of strike Actions that almost succeeded in frightening away Investors. It was at this juncture that Superintendent Max A Kanu was transferred from the Mile 91 Police Division to Lunsar by the Leadership of the Sierra Leone Police. As buttressed by the Locals themselves, he inherited an awkward situation where the smoking of cannabis was indiscriminately done in the open with no regards to Authorities. Superintendent Max A Kanu said he kicked off his operations with the destruction of all the ghettos in the Township and made several arrests on Loiters. ECOMOG said he then proceeded to the formation of a Special Committee that is comprised of some Senior Police Officers including the Support and Community Relations Officers whose principal objective is to look into the concerns of Community Members against the various Mining Companies on the ground, and to as well resolve differences amongst Natives without an uprising. He cited the issues of Rogbalan and Royeaima where the concern of Villagers were peacefully resolved through dialogue. The Local Unit Commander spoke of the ongoing refurbishment on the Lunsar Parent Police Station with support from London Mining Company after he had observed that the Station has not been in any form of repairs for nearly 10 years now. He however disclosed the case of nearly 70 Million Leones worth of Spear parts that is currently under investigations at the Lunsar Police Station. He said these are Spare Parts said to have been procured for the maintenance of one of the Dozer Machines of the Company including Injector Pumps. ECOMOG said some arrests have already been infected in which a Security and other Workers have now been detained to help in the investigations. Below are the photos of the LUC Max A Kanu aka ECOMOG himself, his Support Officer, ASP Gbla and the Refurbished Police Station and other Personnel at the Station....
