Labor market in Rwanda is funny!! And what about Agriculture of Rwanda? ************************************************************************************ Today, the new times of Kigali made my day. This newspaper revealed how bad is the Rwandan labor market. The last one is characterized by a pure disequilibrium between demand and supply. The critical point is seen in youth where hundreds are graduated annually without a responsive counterpart in job creation. The government of Rwanda is encouraging the youth to be entrepreneurs, but the reality is, they cant achieve on their objectives due to the irresponsiveness of Rwandan banking sector. But, according to the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR), things are well painted with white color. Rwanda, I think, is the first country to have a lowest unemployment rate of 2.4% in this world. The population of Rwanda is employed at a rate of 84.2% and among this percentage a big portion of it is found in agriculture of subsistence. A BIG QUESTION!!! Then, the big question is to know when a person is considered to be employed in agriculture? I dont think if it is a person cultivating on an area that is below 1 ha as it is observed in Rwanda. In this beautiful country, 45,8% and 37.6% of the farmers cultivate on a land of below 0.3ha and between 03-09ha respectively. In addition to this, the total arable land is estimated at 1.228.000 ha and amazingly 4% of this land is irrigated while 74,2% of it is protected from erosion. From these two last descriptive data, two more question can be raised by an analyst who want to understand the labor market of Rwanda with a special case of agriculture. 1) where is 84,2 % of employment of Rwanda where the Agriculture is a main sector? 2) At this extent of mechanizing the Rwandan agriculture, when it will shift from a subsistence to a market oriented? In conclusion, as inspired by the analysis carried out by my fellow Rwandan under names of David Himbara, the Rwandan economy is very tiny but it is characterized by cooked statistical data.
