Labour Day started in England way back during the days of Industrial Revolution. The industrial revolution had brought about huge change in the socioeconomic of old England, changing it from an agriculture-based economy to industrialized nation. Industries such as mining and cloth manufacturing required huge labour force, forcing them to offer high wages to entice rural serfs to work with them. The pay was substantially better than what they have been getting working on farms, but the hours and working conditions were bad. There were no such thing as employee welfare. And if you fell sick or died, the employer can easily replace you with other eager workers. It was only when Sir Robert Owen came into the picture that workers begin to have better bargain. He believed in the equality He constituted off days for his employees and medical benefits. Workers were also given voice and this in turn helped to improve productivity. With this, he convinced the other employers to follow suit. And that is the rest of the story. So we have Sir Robert Owen, the Father of Socialism to thank to for todays off-day.
