Laika was one of the first heroes of the space age. Originally a stray dog from the streets of Moscow, she became one of the first animals in space. She was the first animal to orbit the Earth on November 3, 1957 aboard the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2. There was no expectation of her survival in space; the aim of her flight was to prove that a living passenger could survive being launched into orbit and endure weightlessness. Laika died within hours after launch from overheating. On April 11, 2008, Russian officials unveiled a monument to Laika: a dog standing on top of a rocket. More about dogs in space: bit.ly/1dprBjN
