Unfortunately winter is almost upon us and you need to have a plan - TopicsExpress

Unfortunately winter is almost upon us and you need to have a plan in place to protect your plants. Trees are living beings and each one will have a different level of cold tolerance, even within the same species and type. Microclimate, age, size, wind, sunlight, health, are all factors that play into how winter can affect the plant. I or Google can give kind of an idea of the known lows a tree will take but the reality is you dont know until you know. Its real a trial and error thing. Summer is not an issue, its an excuse. Winter is the real deal. Stakes, cloth sheets or blankets, fresh mulch, heat lamps, fans, are all good to have on hand NOW, not waiting until you hear about cold coming. We have an awsome growing climate here in Phoenix, all sorts of sub tropicals grow here. The trick is getting a tree through the first calender year. I was at a friends house today off Central and Bethany enjoying his mature orchard of Mango, Black and White Sapote, Guavaberry, Jaboticaba, Loquat, Surinam Cherry, Bael, Ice Cream Bean, and more. He protected the trees when needed and is now reaping the benefits. Experience is the best teacher, Not if but when you get some foliage damage from cold remember to NOT prune until spring. Dead leaves and branches will provide a little protection from cold. And when you start to wig out when its gets chilly, just think about all the trees in my yard I have to deal with and laugh=). End of my rant
