Lake Open: Blue-Green Algae Advisory! 0 A DEQ analysis of a water sample collected on Monday indicated a Cyanobacteria level of 78,700 cells/ml. The WHO (World Health Organization) guidelines for recreational waters indicate that levels over 20,000 cells/ml pose a moderate probability of health effects, however the threshold for a mandatory closure of Oklahoma public lakes is 100,000 cells/ml. Based on these results, the Lake Hiwassee Board of Directors has tentatively voted to re-open the lake. Be advised that fresh blooms are still being observed, and additional samples are in the process of being tested. The DEQ has cautioned that with higher temperatures the likelihood of a more significant bloom is increased. Please use caution when using the lake. Contact with concentrated blooms along the shoreline should be avoided. The initial test results and the Oklahoma statute regarding this issue are attached.
