Lake Superior Ice Project Artist Biography January 2015 The Story Of Iceman Roger Once upon a time, in a wintery land of ice and snow, lived a man named Roger Hanson. Roger lived with his wife in the middle of the Minnesota woods, in Big Lake. Roger was a very curious fellow, always wanting to learn. So for fun he decided to teach himself about mechanical engineering. Not satisfied with just that, Roger decided to teach himself about electrical engineering. While this engineering knowledge proved interesting, he decided that software development could prove to be very useful. To provide for his family and use all the wonderful knowledge he filled himself with, Roger founded Acucraft, a metal fabrication company. While this company was great, Roger was ready to try new things, so he decided to sell the company. Being the curious and ever inquisitive fellow that he is, Roger knew he needed a new job that had more variety and allowed him to be independent. For this reason, he decided to remain self-employed and develop software for securities markets. Working for himself was great for Roger, it allowed him to work from home at his own pace. What this meant, however, was that Roger could also find time to tinker. You see, Roger had noticed that the geothermal system heating his home expelled a lot of wastewater. Being curious in nature, Roger pondered what he could do with that excess water. Suddenly inspiration struck, he could build an ice sculpture! Roger’s mind was in a whirlwind thinking of all the engineering and software that he could use to create this never before seen sculpture. Soon, using a series of towers, wire cables, a sprayer system, and some new software, Roger created his first ice sculpture. While this daunting wall of ice was large, Roger knew he could do better; he made it a personal challenge to create a sculpture bigger and better every year. Then one day in the midst of winter, a reporter showed up on Rogers’s doorstep, they wanted to put his beautiful creation on the news! From this he gained the title, “The Iceman” and his process of sculpture creation became known as “The Ice Project”. Roger continued to outdo himself creating these sculptures in his yard, when one day he received a call. The City of Superior wanted him to come and build a sculpture in their city, but not just any sculpture; they wanted him to create the world’s largest ice sculpture. Not one to back down from a challenge, Iceman Roger agreed to undertake this monumental task. Roger’s excitement could not be contained; the space, water, and weather of Superior, WI would create the perfect conditions for creating an ice sculpture! The City of Superior had not only contracted with Roger to create one sculpture, they had asked him to come for the next three years. Roger couldn’t help but think of the possibilities that could arise to make the sculpture even bigger in the years to come. So Roger got to work, setting up his towers, cables, sprayer, and software. And that ladies and gentlemen is where our story begins, because right now, Iceman Roger is at Festival Park on Barkers Island working day and night building the world’s largest ice sculpture just for you to come and admire.
