Lal Chowk continues to remain a ghost town =>With the ravaging floods breaking Kashmir‘s economic back bone in September, the business hub of the state’s summer capital is yet to witness normality with the shops in scores yet to resume functioning. According to the KNS correspondent, the famous shops of Lal Chowk that used to remain as the main attraction for the city shoppers have downed their shutters since September 7, giving the business hub a deserted look.The shop keepers told KNS that the government and the insurance companiesare yet to compensate loses and that the scarcity of the selling commodities is compelling them for the continuous closing of their shops. Traders stated that more than 5000 shops were deluged due to the recent floods at Lal Chowk and adjoining areas and few have resumed their functioning so far. Reports added that several shop keepers are still cleaning their shops that were inundated for more than 20 days and that the absence of the government machinery from the ground is multiplying the agoniesof the flood torn business community. He said as a result thousands of youth, who used to work as salesmen, would lose their jobs in case the government failed to rehabilitate them. (KNS)
