Landscape issues were put firmly on the political agenda at the NGO Coalitions Landscapes for Everyone launch in Parliament this week. Barry Gardiner, Labour Shadow Environment spokesman, spoke passionately about access, saying an increase would reduce inequality and strengthen democracy. He highlighted Labours involvement in the National Parks and Countryside Act 1949; Countryside and Rights of Way Act and Marine and Coastal Access Act. Lady Parminter, for the Liberal Democrats, promised the party - if it was involved in Government - would introduce five green laws in the first two years of office, including a Nature Act and a Green Transport Bill. Lord de Mauley spoke about the Governments commitment to the Natural Environment White Paper; the delivery of funding for the English Coastal Path and the important role of Nature Improvement Areas and Local Nature Partnerships. For the NGO Coalition, Peter Nixon, Conservation Director at the National Trust, said landscapes were vital in connecting people and places but were fragile and vulnerable and under enormous pressure. Below is a selection of speaker photos from Tuesdays event plus our Chief Executive Julian Woolford in deep discussion.
