Criterion A of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM V) now - TopicsExpress

Criterion A of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM V) now requires that the individuals experience in response to the stressor must include intense fear, helplessness or horror. This definition expands the type of traumatic events that qualify for PTSD to include violent personal assault, motor vehicle accidents, natural or manmade disasters, learning about the sudden, unexpected death of a family member or a close friend, learning that ones child has a life-threatening disease, or being diagnosed with a life-threatening disease. Any one of us, at any time, could experience one or more of these criteria. Suffering from any one of these events does not mean you will get/have PTSD, but it is important to recognize what can cause it, and be mindful of others who may have suffered one of these events, and to recognize their coping methods. Remember, it is always OK to ask for help!
