(Lara) Guilt and motherhood.... Its a deep and confusing emotion and really doesnt help our journey besides maybe spurring us on to create change. I have plenty I feel guilty about and its tough running a page when assumptions are being made about us but trust me, we are human :) Here is a little story to shed some light on what I am talking about. My twins were born at just 36 weeks and were in the NICU for a week. I was determined to BF. I pumped round the clock despite some life threatening complications after their vaginal birth. I put them to the breast for hours, slept for 30 min and did it all again. On day 5 my milk still wasnt in and the Dr with the highest level of training at this very well known hospital found me and told me my DD needed a bottle of formula as she was becoming dehydrated. The situation was becoming serious and so despite all my research I agreed to one bottle. She drank it and soon after my milk came in and she was 100% breastfed from then on along with her brother. Fast forward 11 years and she has severe gluten intolerance and food sensitivities. Now I know the research and that formula on the virgin gut is a likely culprit for her intolerances but do I feel guilty for my decision at the time? No because truly I made the choice at the time, in the hallway of a NICU with the information known to me already and yet I loved my baby and needed her hydrated and thriving. This is parenting. We do the best with what we have at the time. But, information is power! We can help our babies heal after the fact as well and because we now know these are possibilities we may have to deal with down the road. Dont be afraid to learn and grow and read all you can!
