** Last Double Dog Rescue Adoption of 2014 - Buck Adopts Niki Taylor and Burney Lamar ** Double Dog Rescue was introduced to Niki through Bill Miller. He just happens to be Cheys boss. Bill and Niki were on a Talbots photo shoot when the two were discussing dogs. Niki mentioned that she and her husband, Burney, were looking to adopt a dog. Not just any dog, a black dog! Niki and Burney have always been animal lovers. Burney specifically went into a shelter to pick out his first rescue dog! His determining factor? The dog that looked least likely to get adopted. Burney named him Ace and he lived a happy, healthy life (See attached picture of Ace, the white terrier). Niki had more than her fair share of dogs and other animals too! Needless to say, both agreed they wanted to adopt a black dog. The only obstacle was that they werent ready to adopt until March due to travel commitments. That night, Chey was on the phone with a volunteer at Etowah County Animal Shelter, George Iliff George is a dog hero. On his free time, he visits restaurants to pick up scraps and bones for the shelter dogs. He also visits hotels to see if they would donate old bedding so the dogs dont have to sleep on the cold concrete (Yes, ladies. Another dreamy fella). Midway through the conversation, Chey mentioned that she would need help finding a black dog. After discussing the details, George said, I have the dog for them, Buck. And then, told Chey Bucks story. Bucks original family moved from their home in Alabama and purposely left him behind. He would bounce around from house to house hoping to get scraps. The neighbors took turns putting out food for the little guy and allowed him to sleep on their porches or under their homes. Buck would also spend hours playing with all the neighborhood kids. Buck became the neighborhood dog that everyone loved. A few months later after their house was fully renovated, George and his wife, Patsy, moved back into the neighborhood. They couldnt stand the thought of something happening to this sweet dog. Shortly thereafter, Buck had a roof over his head, a dinner table to eat at, three fur siblings, and plenty of scraps from Georges field trips to restaurants. Chey forwarded Bucks photos to Niki and Buney and it was love at first sight. They were both excited and wanted to hear more about Bucks history. A conference call was arranged with George and the deal was sealed. They wanted to proceed with the adoption. Oh. And they clearly didnt wait until March. Buck went home last Sunday, December 28th. As Niki said, Buck adopted us. To top it off, Buck rode shotgun in the front seat with Dad. We can only hope this doesnt go to his head. But if it does, its well-deserved. A big thank you to: George and Patsy Iliff for keeping Buck safe until he found his forever home and for all their volunteer work. Lisa Nail for her time and incredible photography. Etowah County Animal Shelter for working amicably with rescues. So many shelters make it difficult for rescues to work with them. Double Dog Rescue is grateful for the relationship. Burney, Niki, and their entire family for wanting to rescue a dog in need and for providing him with a wonderful home and future.
