Last Thursday, I got to talk to someone who once again experienced the reality of a wonderful supernatural irony I think we would all do well to understand. It is this: that just when everything seems to be falling apart and all human consideration tells you that you ought to be sad, once you see all these as coming from the hand of the loving God for whom you are a mere instrument and nothing else, accept such a fact in total abandonment as the best thing coming from a Mind that is all-wise, and finally, be genuinely grateful to Him for making and keeping you part of such a wonderful adventure as human redemption, you experience that ineffable and indescribably joy that can only come from Him Who is Happiness Himself. Last night, Friday, just when he thought that the joy could not any more increase, God gave more of it: the announcement that our beloved Don Alvaro del Portillo will soon be beatified, and Pope John Paul II canonized. Today, he and his friends were served appetizers for lunch by an Administration that experienced the same joy from the good news of Don Alvaro’s beatification. That made them happy as well. Everyone is happy because God is good.
