Last Thursday, the American Littoral Society hosted a Spill Spotters workshop focused on responding to oils spills and other sources of marine pollution at the Jacques Cousteau Coastal Center in Tuckerton, NJ. Approximately 40 people attended the workshop including representatives from FEMA, Surf Rider Foundation, and Riverkeeper. Speakers included Gerald Conrad, Coast Guard Port Security Specialist and Contingency Planner, who discussed the Area Contingency Plan for responding to spills, and Virginia Rettig, Forsythe Wildlife Refuge Manager, who discussed post Sandy cleanup of the refuge. Micah Fink of Common Good Productions also demoed the Marine Defenders app which allows citizens to report oils spills, marine debris, and biological events such as fish kills and algal blooms.
