Last night, I had the honor along with our city council members to read a proclamation to acknowledge, Mr. Phil Johnson, “FIRST CITIZEN OF CHESAPEAKE 2014” at the Chesapeake Rotary Club’s annual banquet for the first citizen. Mr. Johnson’s public service career, he has faithfully served as a member of the South Norfolk Ruritans. He was awarded Ruritan of the Year 1996 and served as Ruritan President in 1998. Mr. Johnson also served as a member of the Chesapeake Industrial Development Authority, Chairman of the Chesapeake Environment Improvement Council, Charter member of the Chesapeake Mayor’s Drug Taskforces, former member and Chairman of the Chesapeake Veterans Committee, President of Chesapeake Care Inc. Board of Directors, member and treasurer of the Virginia Urban Forest Council “Tree Virginia,” Chesapeake Chamber of Commerce and former member of the Chesapeake Local Emergency Planning Committee. Mr. Johnson’s exemplary public service and decades of civic contribution show his dedicated leadership and commitment to the greater public good in the City of Chesapeake. He serves as the Co-Founder and past president of the Chesapeake Arboretum; Co-Founder of the Chesapeake Health Foundation of the Chesapeake Regional Medical Center; Co-Founder of the Hampton Roads Urban Forestry Roundtable; Co-Founder of the Urban Forest Trailblazer and currently a member of the Chesapeake Sports Club, Great Bridge Battlefield and Waterways Foundation Advisory Board, American Camellia Society and Virginia Camellia Society; and Again, congratulations and devoting his life to do all that he can do to shape a better tomorrow for our great city; Mr. Phil Johnson is our “FIRST CITIZEN OF CHESAPEAKE 2014”
