Last night I was channel surfing and just so happened to stumble upon the PBS airing of A MusiCares Tribute to Bruce Springsteen. The song just starting to be performed when I landed on the channel: Jackson Browne singing American Skin (41 Shots), featuring Tom Morello on guitar. This is an absolutely amazing performance by the two of them! Written by The Boss 14 years ago in the aftermath of the fatal NYC police shooting of Amadou Diallo, the song unfortunately speaks just as loud and with as much relevance today as it did when Springsteen debuted it in 2000. In light of all that has been happening across the country with the protests associated with grand jury no bills in the police murders of Michael Brown and Eric Gardner, it felt eerie but oh so very appropriate to somehow find my way to THIS song, on THIS night.
