Last night at a halfway full McDonalds in Atlanta, I got into quite the heated discussion with a white gentleman from Macon, Georgia who took it upon himself to turn to me during a news broadcast about the hammer murder of Zemir Begic in St. Louis and said, See, the Bosnians are not rioting and looting over this. This is how civilized people behave. So, of course, I asked him to explain the Bosnian War, the ethnic cleansing of the Muslims & Croatians, and how multiple groups of Bosnians basically burned their entire country to the ground while killing about 150K people, using rape as a form of warfare and creating a refugee nightmare. Of course, he didnt know anything about that; in fact, he didnt believe it happened and that I was making it up to make the Bosnians look bad. So he switched gears and started talking about the thugs who killed this man because of race, but I pointed out that the police said that they thought race was not involved at all, which I pointed to the tv where an actual blurb was running saying that exact same thing. So THEN he starts to paint this picture of Begic as this nice guy with a great girlfriend. And I asked How do you know?...His only response was, I shit you not, Just look at the pictures. SO I fired off a series of questions: How we know he didnt have weed in his system that made him belligerent toward those young men? How do we know they werent defending themselves against someone who comes from a society with a violent, murderous culture with a thug mentality? Maybe he reached for what they thought was a gun? Have you gone digging through his social media pages to find him in poses showing how good or bad a person he is or are you just making this shit up? Have you dug into his parents background to see if there is any dirt on them or are you are assuming they are salts of the earth? And why was he even out at that time of night anyway, going on a date in the first place? And why are you defending an immigrant, who should have stayed in his own country in the first place? Of course he was APPALLED to hear these questions and started going of on me for being a racist, how dare I not recognize that a human being was murdered, why was I attacking his parents, didnt he had a right to go on a date minding his own business, and this gem: Dont you realize that a human being died and a family lost someone they loved?..and while he was going off, I just cocked my head to the side and said nothing. When he finished, I said, Now replace a good deal of this conversation this Mike Brown, Treyvon Martin, Oscar Grant, Ezell Ford, John Crawford or Tamir Rice and maybe youll figure out how we feel. And he said, But those are different! And I said, Youre right: at least the guys accused of killing this man are behind bars and will almost certainly go to trial, and will likely go to prison if not worse for this senseless murder. Thats the difference.
