Last summer we sweltered in our bedroom. The back of the house - TopicsExpress

Last summer we sweltered in our bedroom. The back of the house faces east, and with a big window in our room and the whole back of the house a “sunroom”, basically the place was like an oven. We did our best, covering the outside of the windows in aircell, keeping the concrete floor uncovered, installing ceiling fans, and getting up early, but it was still pretty hot. So this spring we have taken a multi pronged approach. The eastern window has been bricked in (double brick), recycled battens from the roof have been fastened onto those bricks, aircell stapled on, then another layer of battens and tin. This basically turns it into reverse brick veneer. And yesterday Tim added metal mesh to the tin about 10cm out from the wall. Kerry and I spent a lovely hour or so untangling the passionfruit and hooking it onto the mesh. With a grapevine planted ready to run up the other side (our private verhandah) it’s going to be cool and beautiful. The front of the house will get the same treatment, but without the tin . . . we need it to look like rendered bricks or every Italian in Freo is going to get upset!
