Last updated: Tuesday 10 July, 4.00pm The Metservice has issued a severe weather warning for damaging North West winds over the South Island on the afternoon and evening of Tuesday 10 September and Wednesday 11 September. Very heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected about the West Coast from Fiordland to Nelson, spreading east over the Otago and Canterbury Headwaters. A significant amount of rain is expected and people in the affected areas are advised that Canterbury rivers are likely to rise rapidly with the risk of flash flooding. In addition, northwesterlies are expected to rise severe gale for most eastern parts of the South Island with gusts of 120km/h, but damaging gusts of 140km/h about inland Canterbury. Winds of this strength are likely to bring down trees and powerlines, and make driving dangerous, especially for motorcycles and high sided vehicles. What to do: Be aware that heavy rain may cause rivers to rise rapidly and may cause flash flooding and ford closures Avoid driving in high winds Secure anything that could cause damage or fly away from your house in high winds Be prepared in case high winds cause parts of Selwyn to lose power – keep a battery operated radio, bottled drinking water, warm clothing, non- perishable food supplies and a can opener, a torch and medical supplies on hand in case they are required Continue to check weather reports online at metservice and visit the Council’s website, selwyn.govt.nz for any updated advice. Keep a battery operated radio on hand in case you lose power Stay safe and warm This information will be reviewed at 10am on Wednesday 11 September.
