Last weekend the Royal Yeomanry returned from two weeks in Cumbria, where they have been training as a regiment, bringing together soldiers from Squadrons in London, Croydon, Leicester, Nottingham, Dudley and Telford for the first time. The Yeomen have been training for months to learn to drive and operate their RWMIK vehicles – which are stripped-down, open-top Land Rovers with machine guns mounted on top. They have also been firing with new sights on their upgraded rifles and practising other skills including radios, first aid and map reading – and all on the wind-swept mountains on Warcop Training Area. The Royal Yeomanry’s role is as ‘Light Cavalry’ and they have a range of military tasks to be ready for – from reconnaissance to raiding, reacting quickly to threats and protecting civilians. So this training period has been packed with exercises, tests and practices to make sure they can work together effectively in all conditions. The Royal Yeomanry is recruiting those who want to take up the challenge of soldiering alongside their civilian lives, learn these skills and become part of the team.
