Last year, controversy on the ratification of a Bi-lateral Investment Treaty between the UK and Colombia triggered a debate in the House of Lords, albeit after the treaty was ratified. This BIT poses grave risks to the achievement of human rights and the successful implementation of agreements that are currently being made in the peace dialogues between the FARC guerrilla and the Colombian Government, taking place in Havana. It also places the UK in danger of inconsistency with its own commitments on human rights in investment agreements made in the UK Action Plan on the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs); and commitments in the joint declaration on human rights made by Colombia and the UK. iied.org/why-parliament-should-scrutinise-uk-ethiopia-bit
