Last year there were 600 more deaths each week than in 2011. This is clear evidence, were it needed, that austerity and declining living standards are causing life expectancy to go into reverse and are causing tens of thousands of excess deaths. This is not the result of a "natural" calamity: it is the anarchy of the market system which causes resources to be allocated away from A&E departments, hospital beds and health care.
