Late evening returns home usually mean good results, and tonight - TopicsExpress

Late evening returns home usually mean good results, and tonight is no exception. This weekend, the Salthawks competed at Wichita East High School and at Abilene High School, and the results continue to be impressive! Novices competed hard, learned much, and had fun at Wichita East and Abilene, and I continue to be proud of their growth as debaters. At Wichita East, Seniors Riley Crane, LaKiyah Sain, Sydni Huxman, and Brennan Schartz along with Juniors Julia Henry and Zoe Crater finished with a 4-1 record. At most tournaments, a 4-1 record would qualify you for the elimination debates, but Wichita East is one of the most competitive tournaments in the state drawing top teams from all across Kansas and Oklahoma. Due to tiebreakers such as the overall win/loss record of our opposition, only the team of Riley and LaKiyah qualified for elimination debates as the second overall seed. Riley and LaKiyah won their quarterfinals debate on a 3-0 decision, and lost a close semifinals debate on a 2-1 decision. They finished the tournament in 3rd place and clenched their second bid and qualified to the Kansas Debate Coaches Invitational tournament in January! First major goal of the season = met! Despite not advancing to elimination debates due to tiebreakers, Sydni, Brennan, Julia, and Zoe all earned bids to the Kansas Debate Coaches Invitational tournament as well. As a result Sydni and Brennan also clenched their second bid and qualified to the Kansas Debate Coaches Invitational tournament, completing their first major goal of the season as well! The week ahead is a busy one for the Hutchinson High School debate team with tournaments at Derby, Andover Central, Buhler, and Blue Valley North. We have a lot of work to do to prepare but with this great group of students, no challenge is out of reach and no task is too difficult!
