Launch of ‘Give Way to Ambulance’Campaign – Save Life (16-11-2014) Sunday, 16th Nov, on the occasion of World Remembrance Day for Road Accident Victims, at Raahgiri, Gurgaon Sponsored by Artemis Hospitals, Road Safety Organization (RSO) has launched a campaign ‘Give Way to Ambulance ‘in association with Gurgaon Police and Raahgiri. The key aim of the campaign is to increase awareness and educate citizens about the importance of giving way to Ambulances on Indian roads. Every citizen will be encouraged to take a pledge that they will clear the way for an ambulance whenever they hear the siren so that the emergency vehicle reaches the hospital faster. The hospital and RSO will work closely with Gurgaon Police to discuss possibility of providing a preferential / green corridor for the critical patients, and also educating ambulance drivers on the desired driving pattern. With the increasing traffic on the roads, ambulances have a tough task in taking the patients to hospitals on time. This campaign would emphasize that vehicles must move left, making way for the ambulance on hearing the siren. A recent survey revealed that nearly 18,000 patients who are transported in ambulances every year could be saved from medical complications if the vehicles could reach hospitals faster.India has the highest incidences of death due to delay in Ambulance services. The chances of survival from a heart attack or a life threatening injury reduces from 70% to 7% in just 4 minutes due to delay in first emergency medical response.During an emergency situation, prompt medical assistance is the key to save a life. The chances of surviving a heart attack reduces by 10% with every minute that passes. The campaign was launched by Sh. Vivek Sharma, IPS, Jt. CP/Crime, Gurgaon at Raahgiri. Supporting the initiative, Sh.Vivek Sharma said “Gurgaon Police will be sensitized about the importance of giving way to Ambulance and our traffic department will help clear the way at major intersections when they hear the siren. At the same time, Hospitals and Ambulance service providers needs to understand the fact that Ambulance Siren should only be used in cases of utmost emergency”, added Sh.Vivek Sharma. Expressing her concern on the current blockage in emergency services, Dr. Devlina Chakravarty, Chief Executive Officer – Artemis Hospitals, says, “This effort will see a major change in the outlook of people in and around Gurgaon and help us to improve the quality of our emergency services. Everyone should be aware of the fact that ‘Saving time is saving life’. None of the law and order can bring a change unless every one of us embraces these changes. We request you not to ignore the ambulance in a traffic jam and let it pass first, and spread awareness to support the cause”. “Gurgaon has some of the best equipped hospitals; sadly, they continue to miss on the crucial life saving time because of irregular traffic system. The major challenges faced by the Ambulatory services are the crowded roads, congested by-lanes and heavy traffic. When someone suffers a cardiac emergency, stroke or accidental trauma, every second countsand we hope that this initiative of ours will help such patients reach hospital faster and save their precious lives”, says Sh.Harmeet Gulati, Road Safety Officer – RSO.
