Lauren Testerman performs Seth Bisen-Hershs new song, If I Had Said No at the 6th Annual Broadway Can! concert, Sunday, November 16, 2014. sethbh This is a world premiere tonight of a song I wrote in Germany. I was fortunate enough to go on a Germany government sponsored trip for Jews, where they try to foster German-American Jewish relationships. We did a lot of Jewish museums, including the Holocaust one in Berlin, and then that day we went to Sachenhausen, one of the first work camps where my biological grandfather had once been held. At the museum, they had sound booths where you could hear true stories from survivors; I picked Auschwitz because that is where my grandmother spent a few years, and I heard this story from a woman who when asked if her son was twelve and old enough to work, implored with the guard to not make him work. Then, she begged the guard to let her mother stay with the children. She did not realize at the time, but she had sent both her son and mother to their deaths by answering no to one question… a split second decision… I was so distraught by this, that I wrote the following song on the bus back from Sachenhausen.
