Lawmaker Annoyed With Pres. Sirleaf Amidst swelling public outcry of unemployment, Grand Bassa County Electoral District #3 Representative Gabriel Buchanan Smith has expressed dismay over the reported refusal of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf to approve the 2013/2014 National Budget into law. Speaking to legislative reporters on Thursday, October 17, 2013, Representative Smith claimed that the growing wave of economic hardship is due to the reported refusal of the Liberian leader to sign the fiscal document into law. According to him, several Liberians are awaiting temporary employment if the budget is urgently approved by the President. He alleged that public schools and medical centers currently lack logistics in the discharge of national duties due to the delay in the signing of the budget. The Grand Bassa County legislator pointed out that several projects earmarked to be implemented in this year’s fiscal document cannot be done due to the President’s refusal to approve the budget. He claimed that the rebuilding process of Liberia is presently in hostage due to the Liberian leader’s refusal to sign several projections in the budget. Representative Smith argued that if the President is dissatisfied about the various projects, adding that the budget needs to be sent back to the National Legislature for urgent scrutiny. He disclosed that four months (July, August, September & October) have gone in the 2013/2014 fiscal period without any approval. He argued that mounting political tension can be reduced if the budget is urgently approved, adding that jobless Liberians will be temporarily employed during the implementation of projects. The House’s Committee Chairman on Elections & Inauguration argued that members of the 53rd National Legislature will be prepared to convene to discuss about budgetary projections in a special session to reduce hardship ordinary Liberians are confronted with. He clarified that his appeal is intended to reduce the economic hardship in the country if the budget is approved by the President urgently. It can be recalled that both houses of the 53rd National Legislature passed the fiscal envelope before its second constituency break to resume next year (2014).
