Laying Down A Pipe Of Port By Robert K. Stephen (CSW) (TORONTO, ON) – While travelling in Spain this summer I encountered Tinsey Chan, a Burgundian wine merchant and Vintage Port importer currently residing in Lyon, who broached a cute story over dinner at a communal table in a wonderful restaurant in Hondarribia, Spain. It was about a fascinating, but largely disappearing, British tradition called “Laying Down a Pipe of Port”. Given the amount of Port in a pipe, it is quite obvious that only a certain wealthy individual could afford this charming and endearing practice; which highlights the massive importance Port has played in British wine drinking society. Now, somewhat prone to lurid tabloidism, this tradition has been offered to a lower societal element by The Cotswold Port Company of Moreston-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, and all explained in a press release entitled “Booze for Baby-a vintage port tradition making a comeback”. The release can be read online. windsorsquare.ca/2013/11/laying-down-a-pipe-of-port
