He’s healthy and stays active and enjoys his lifestyle, but what if he fell and something happened to him and there was no one there to take care of him? FATHER: Being alone was something new for me, and I didn’t want to have people always checking on me. I didn’t want to feel like one of those old people I see in the life alert commercials, lying on the floor yelling for help. But I also didn’t want my kids to worry about me being alone. I still enjoy working on projects in the basement or doing work in the yard when the weather’s nice, and I don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon. DAUGHTER: It was important that my siblings and I recognized that Dad wanted to be independent, but we also wanted to be able to make sure that he was okay. So we started researching medical alert systems. There’s a wide variety out there, and some of it is kind of confusing – but then we found this medical alert system from Medical Care Alert. It’s a little button that he can wear around his neck as a pendant or on his belt, and if he needs it, he speaks directly into it, just like he’s talking on a cordless phone. The system also came with other emergency help buttons that we can put in different parts of the house that Dad could use in case he fell, like his bathroom or in the workshop or near the bottom of the stairs. FATHER: I know that I can be stubborn at times, but my kids and grandkids are the most important thing in the world to me, and if I can help them feel more comfortable about me being alone and not worry about checking up on me, I’m happy to have my medical alert system. I don’t like to ask for help, but it is nice to know that if I ever need it, it’s just a touch of a button away.
