Leaving aside all the spin and fluff, long-term unemployment is - TopicsExpress

Leaving aside all the spin and fluff, long-term unemployment is the single biggest issue around the world. Its not just here. Its whats animating political crises in every corner, even the explosive Mid-East. Countries with stable, gainful employment for all their citizens are also stable politically. In Western industrialized countries with accepted political systems and governance, the conflict between the Right and the Left distills to whether governments should intervene to adjust economic conditions. Its even more a foundational issue than lower taxes, and its not a simple issue. Those who wish to render the complex as a soundbite will find themselves coping with the question and unintended consequences over and over in an infinite cycle of political instability and economic misery. The problem in a nutshell: long-term unemployment for significant numbers always results in political volatility and violence. People do not starve meekly. If the problem is managed coercively, the State begins to gather power at the expense of individual rights. If the problem is managed profligately (as in poorly-thought out stimulus and/or doles) the state will collapse out of the accumulated debt and destroyed currency, leaving it vulnerable to external threats as well. We are our own worst enemies here. There is no way through this thicket without cooperative endeavour freed of political bile. Biggest single point everyone has to ponder and work through to acceptance: managing a government is NOT like managing a household budget, and people who insist thats a true analogy need to go sit in a corner and wear a dunce cap for a while until they come to their senses. If they *know* its different but proclaim it anyway out of political gain, they are true enemies of the state and of the people.
