Leeds Central Bus Station air raid shelter. Many people remember the dark, and rather depressing bus station we had in Leeds until it was replaced in 1996. But not many people know there was a W.W.2 air raid shelter built below the ladies waiting room and toilet block. The bus station was built in 1938, at the same time, and in the same architectural style as the Quarry Hill flats. Many Leeds buildings built at this time had provisions for air raid shelters. The war clouds were gathering, and the Luftwaffe had already displayed the devastating effects of aerial bombardment during the Spanish civil war. The Basque town of Guernica was flattened by the Luftwaffe in 1937.
