Left us on this day (Nov. 1) in 2008: Detroit R&B singer Nathaniel Mayer (stroke, age 64), who first surfaced in the early-’60s with several records on Fortune Records, including the 1962 Top 40 hit, Village of Love; he left the music business & all but vanished six years later, becoming a part of blues folklore & urban legend; in 2002, reissue specialists Norton Records released a previously unissued 34-year-old track by Nathaniel, prompting him to emerge from self-imposed exile; he mounted his biggest tour ever & signed with hip indie label Fat Possum Records; he toured with The Black Keys in 2005, turning on a new generation of fans with his raunchy & energetic live show; Nathaniels last sessions were released across two albums, 2007s Why Dont You Give It To Me? & 2009s Why Wont You Let Me Black?, both on Alive Records…
