Well, yes -- the world, right now (but then, when, in truth, friends, has it been any measurably different, save for the halcyon time when we was little and had the sweet luxury of not paying any mind to its darker side?), is a dangerously chaotic place full of turbulent wolfish sound and unremitting fury which neither one of us, on an individual or even, alas, collective basis, can do anything substantive to diminish (good luck trying to talk sense into the echoing pig-iron head of certifiably deranged Putin, for instance); but -- on a much lighter and lovelier and more life-affirming note, as a public service announcement of sorts (for I have no profitable stake in the matter... no, really), I would like to let those in the verdant ville de Vilnius and its environs know that the bagels sold in regrettably small batches every Monday/Wednesday/Friday morning at Tie Kepejai coffee-shop (Tilto g., 6) are quite remarkable and unexpectedly excellent and altogether superb; and as someone rooted in two world capitals of traditional bageldom, Montreal and New York, Id like to think I know to some degree whereof I speak on this particular matter (unlike, Im afraid, most other matters I tend to opine on). Granted, a bagel is a bagel is a bagel -- there is a natural limit with regards to the degree of its presumed heavenliness, as there is a natural limit to the extent of transcendental happiness one can derive from the eating of a dill pickle, say; a bagel, even one accompanied by a succulent slice of dill pickle, wont put you into a nirvana of eternal spring or grant you deathless love, but, when done right, it will lift your spirits, at least for a short while. Which, of course, is a whole lot better than nothing, given the rancid nature of the world we live in. Youre welcome.
