Left us on this day (Oct. 1) in 2011: UK popular & classical music composer & musician David Bedford (lung cancer, age 74); hired to orchestrate Kevin Ayers Joy of a Toy debut solo album in 1969, he joined Kevins backing band, The Whole World, on keyboards & accordion, recording the 1970 follow-up LP Shooting at the Moon; he also contributed to later Kevin Ayers albums as keyboardist & orchestral arranger; Davids other best known collaborations were with Mike Oldfield, orchestrating & conducting The Orchestral Tubular Bells (1975, Virgin Records); Mike returned the favour on such Bedford-led Virgin albums as Stars End (1974), The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1975), The Odyssey (1976) & Instructions for Angels (1977); David also worked with the likes of Roy Harper, a-ha, Elvis Costello, Billy Bragg, Robert Wyatt & many others; from 1969-81, he served as Composer in Residence at Queens College, London…(this & more featured today at Roch Parisiens Rocon Communications music chat page...)
