Let me spin you a yarn... (get it..? Yarn?) I learned how to - TopicsExpress

Let me spin you a yarn... (get it..? Yarn?) I learned how to pigtail when I was very young. Thats how I got started. Does anybody here know what pigtailing is? Its a lot like crochetting, but just with your fingers. No tools required. Anyway, I mastered that in no time, and made a few dollhouse rugs. I was so proud. I think I must have been 6 or 7 years old. Then I got a rug spool, and made a rug for my own room. It turned out quite good! I believe i was was around 8 years old at that time. My Grandma Betty taught me how to knit at the tender young age of 8. It took a little time for it to finally click, but once it did, you could not keep those needles out of my hands! I would even use dollar store paintbrushes as travel-safe knitting needles, so if a car accident would happen, I wouldnt poke anybody! I made my first quilt, also with Grandma Betty, around the age of ten. We would have sleepovers over there, and she would have my sister and I over all evening, we would watch Coronation Street, the 6:00 news, eat supper, draw, she would show us how she would put her hair up in curlers in the old days, in those huge curlers with the plastic pins, then we would grab our knitting projects and head off to bed. And on one of those sleepovers we made quilts. Those quilts hung over our closets, and we used them as a closet door for years! My mom is the one who really taught me how to sew. I was around 10-12 years old. I even had a sewing machine in my bedroom, and I mended a few of my shirts, or took them in at the sides if I had something that didnt fit right.. I learned alterations rather quickly, and I made a lot of those little cushions to sell at our yard sale. Not much profit there at 25¢ each, but a tiny bit. It was fun, nonetheless. Anyway, the age of 10 was when Grandma also taught me how to crochet. That was a hit instantly! I automatically enjoyed it way more! By the age of 15, I had mastered the craft and made myself a sweater without a pattern, while I was at a Craft Sale with my mom. People were walking by asking what I was working on. Where was my pattern. How old am I. And I was just in my glory, because this 15 year old making herself a sweater she designed, with the pattern completely in her brain, was just baffling them! I even wore it to school that Monday, then wore it to Grandmas place to show her I actually did it. Was she ever happy! She pulled out her Instant camera, and took 2 pictures! One for me, one for her. I felt honoured, because I knew that film for that camera worked out to approximately $1 a picture, and the film was getting hard to find already! And now, ten years later, Ive realized during the extremely busy times that have come and gone, where I didnt make much time for creating, I was miserable! I enjoy it so much, I finally established a hobby business for it, and I must say, Grandma Betty would be proud, because she taught me a lot of what Im doing now. :)
