Lets take this opportunity to look back and remember the class of 1976. Because of is youth month some of our youth they dont understand why 16 june is holiday... After our first democratic election in 1994, 18 years after the soweto uprising,16 june was declared a public holiday and it named Youth Day. Before South Africa became democracy,learners political activists and ordinary people would commemorate 16 june every year. During this time the apartheid gorvernment led by the National Party was still at power. Police would often attack and arrest people at 16 june commemoratation allies.Sometimes the government announced that these rallies were banned,this meant that if the rallies went ahead the organisers and others would be charged with crime... 16 june is celebrated every year in South Africa with a public holiday, on wednesday 16 june 1976 a march was organised in soweto and many childern were attended they were angry because they were forced to be taught half of their subject in afrikaans.. The police responded to the march by shooting many unarmed children.
