Lets talk briefly about the Pecary. In Mexico there´s only 2 species of Pecari (White-lipped and White-collared pecary). In Cozumel Island we can only find a subspecies of the White collared pecary (Pecari tajacu nanus), another endemic and therefore exclusive species of the Island. Their main peculiarity is dwarf size compared with the mainland species. It is also maybe the most dangered pecari species because of their restricted distribution. English speakers named in different ways: Javali, Javalina, Pecari, wild pig or skunk pig; but they all refer to the White Collared Pecari (P. tajacu nanus). In spanish people call it Pecari de collar, Puerco de monte o Puerco salvaje. In Mayan lenguage its call Quitan. They are manly diurnal and live in groups. Small groups for Cozumel Island. Although usually ignore human presence, collared peccaries might react IF THREATENED, using long fangs that are sharpened alone when open and close their mouth. Furthermore, they release a strong musk if alarmed. Remember they are usually harmless. It feeds on fruits, tubers, grasses, invertebrates, and small vertebrates. I just read a few days ago people saying that the Pecaris are a problem and they will become a problem. THAT IS TOTALLY FALSE. The Pecary have lived hundreds or thousands of years on the island and have never been a problem. Why you consider it a problem?, because it ruins your garden?. Let me tell you, there’s a problem and the problem is you. You come to the island, you destroy their habitat, build a house where they usually live; and after all you get angry because they eat your garden. We must have respect for wildlife. And remember my CZM4U friends, White Collared Pecary is protected by Federal Law. if you commit a crime against this species the penalty is at least two years in prison without bail.
