Let’s Ask God If Christ were only a cistern, we might soon - TopicsExpress

Let’s Ask God If Christ were only a cistern, we might soon exhaust His fullness, but who can drain a fountain? Countless believers throughout the ages have drawn their supplies from Him, and not one of them has complained at the insufficiency of His resources. - Charles Spurgeon, Morning and Evening When I need wisdom, there is so much I am tempted to do. My first steps are to text my dad, poll my closest friends, consult Dr. Google, and do everything before I go to God. I’m not sure why my default is so earthly, but it is and I know that. I wonder if it has something to do with the instant reassurance my flesh receives when my people affirm my thoughts. It may also be that I was raised in the Google generation, and stringing together a quick couple words will amount to layers of information, more than I could ever need. In a world of social media and Facebook and Facetime, we can get immediate feedback and affirmation from others at times when we should wait on the wisdom of our unchanging God. James tells us that God is generous to give us wisdom and that He won’t scold us for asking. It’s with this same generosity that God grants King Solomon a lifetime of wisdom in the Old Testament account found in 1 Kings. In James 1:6, we are told that we must ask expectantly, confident that God will grant us the wisdom He has promised. James even goes as far to say that we are double-minded if we ask yet do not expect. He uses rich ocean imagery, comparing someone who doubts God’s willingness or ability to grant wisdom to a wave driven and tossed by the wind. I wonder if I’m unwilling to sit and listen to the still and small way God may be granting wisdom. I wonder if most of us are caught up in the quick and gratifying nature of our fast-paced world. How much of God’s provision are we missing because we’re unwilling to ask for the wisdom He promises to happily give? Friends are lovely and community is integral to our Christian lives. We know that to be true. But, there is something that we’re missing if we are quicker to reach to a friend with earthbound wisdom than to God who is a never ending cistern. What are your patterns or tendencies when you’re seeking? Do you ask God to give you increasing wisdom? Do you try to face a problem head-on and start a group text with your best friends? Maybe you, like me, are accustomed to putting more weight on man’s opinion than God’s. God promises to give us wisdom, without withholding, if we just ask. We can believe that our unchanging God will grant what He has pledged. Let’s have confidence and, as a community of women, ask that He will move and make us wiser and more faithful, able to love more fully because of His gift. Read James 1:5-8 & I Kings 3:5-28.
