“Let’s start a conversation about what more we can do.” The reality of suicide in Australia Seven lives will be lost from suicide every day, or 2,535 lives lost to suicide each year. For men and women aged between 15 and 44, it’s the leading cause of death in this country. Who are the seven Australians who will take their own lives today? For starters, five are likely to be men. Of those, half will be middle-aged and the rest are in their teens to 30s. Three of them probably live in a rural or regional area and the other two are likely to be in major regional or metropolitan locations. According to the statistics, two of the five males are more likely to be of indigenous background. Of the two women expected to take their lives today, one will be middle-aged to elderly and the other will be on the younger end of the spectrum. They are both more likely to live in a larger town or city. Shocking statistics ... Twice as many Australians will die by suicide than in road accidents this year. Overall, two of those who die live in New South Wales, one in Victoria, two in Queensland, one in Western Australia and the remaining victim in either South Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory or the Australian Capital Territory. On top of these tragic numbers, around 200 other people will attempt suicide today and another 250 will make a plan to do it. While these are only daily breakdowns based on annual Australian Bureau of Statistics figures from 2012, they put into perspective the message that experts have been trying to send for years. “This is a big, serious and widespread issue and there’s a lot to do,” If you, or someone you know needs help, please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.
