Life and Light! For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light.(Psalm 36:9 ESV) As we study the Bible we quickly discover that there are two types of people in the world - the wicked and the righteous. We see this scenario develop from the beginning. In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.” (Genesis 4:3-7 ESV) God looked into the heart of both men and saw one was trusting in God and the other trusted self. From that point we see a division of mankind - those who willingly followed God (the line of Seth)and those who chose their own way.(the line of Cain) This second group falls into the category David describes in Psalm 36; Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in his heart; there is no fear of God before his eyes.(Psalm 36:1 ESV) Later in Isaiah we discover that even the best the righteous had to offer came up short of Gods standard. But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.(Isaiah 64:6 KJV) The only remedy we find for the dilemma we face is JESUS CHRIST. He stated, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.(John 14:6 ESV) and, Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12 ESV) In Christ we have LIFE and LIGHT! David foresaw this, understanding that life and light come from God alone. Thats why he wrote, For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light. Scripture is replete with references to the fountain of life and the light of the world. The fountain is the Holy Spirit and we, as Believers, are called the light! (Matthew 5:14) The question we must all answer is; Am I displaying LIFE and am I being LIGHT to the world?
