Like most of you I love this place. Our coast and forests are an awesome asset to all of us to enjoy. What most people dont realise are the huge threats facing our indigenous species. There is a war going on out there. From Kiwi to Kauri and every bird or bug or plant in between is under threat from foreign invaders. The post about the beaches and estuaries not being swimable illustrates one of the things we DO notice but most of the destruction goes unnoticed. DOC and the Regional Council can not protect everything by themselves. They need our support. Many of you may already be doing your bit or may want to. DOC is changing the way it works with the Community to be more supportive and inclusive of those wanting to help. I believe the Northern Regional Council (NRC) needs to adopt the same inclusiveness because they alone can not win the war against weeds and pests that are killing our forests and coastline. Later this month there will be a by election for the NRC Te Hiku seat and you will have a chance to elect a new Councillor. I am running for this seat again because I feel strongly that a Councillor should be leading the sort of action that we need the Community more involved with.
