Like some others I know, I was born prematurely. Because of this, the bones in my lower legs and feet were not fully developed. This required me to wear braces for the early portion of my life. I have only a couple of faint memories of the braces. My parents were always very gentle putting them on and taking them off. They told me later in life that I never cried or whined when they would put them on. Never. Not once. They also told me that whenever they were going to take a picture, they took them off. They had faith that one day I would not need them, and they didnt want me growing up feeling I had been handicapped. Im sure thats why, in almost every picture they took of me at a young age, I have the biggest smile on my face. Through my life, there have been periods where I have had trouble walking. Trouble doing the things one does when walking and standing normally. Cleaning. Carrying things. And heaven forbid, running. I think this is why I have always felt a special empathy for those unable to walk. Whatever the reason, whether it be defect, illness, accident, or age. I know how it feels.
