Limerick International Brigades memorial trust FRIDAY 12 SEPT @ 7pm, Mechanics Institute, Harstonge St.Photographic exhibition: DEFENDERS OF THE SPANISH REPUBLIC by Pablo Vazquez Borragan. LIBMT presents an exhibition of photographs of elderly survivors who fought for the Republic in the Spanish Civil War 1936-39, and in the postwar underground resistance. This collection of simple yet powerful portraits shows how every crease and line denotes their experiences and the passage of time since the war, years which were taken away from their comrades, friends and family. This photo shows Robert Andrew Bob Doyle (1916-2009). Bob was he last surviving Irish combatant on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War. This poignant photo was taken where his comrade in the Republic Congress, Charlie Donnelly died with the brigades in the battle of Jarama 70 years ago. With a small olive branch in his hand Bob recalled Charlies last words to a comrade, the inspiration for the title of our festival, Even the olives are bleeding. Vazquez Borragan is a Madrid-based photographer and his showings are supported by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. For further details please contact our PRO at libmtrust@gmail
