Lions are being driven to extinction and, sadly, U.S. hunters are a major part of the problem. The number of African lions has declined by more than 50 percent in the past three decades, with fewer than 40,000 -- and possibly as few as 23,000 -- estimated to remain today. Lions exist in only one-quarter of their former range and are suffering from loss of habitat and prey. Given this, the loss of 500 lions to American trophy hunters every year is a travesty. The U.S. must play its part in eliminating the threats to these beautiful animals.
