Listening to The Current on CBC radio while I work. First story is about western govts squabbling over who gets to plant the flag and own the North Pole for its resources. Then a story about a white retired judge from Alberta who gets it that the judicial system that was imposed on on Aboriginal people isnt working for them or the country. He tells the story of how the system tried to shut him up and shut him down. Then a story about the hottest chili peppers in the world concludes by saying that chilis are one of the indigenous foods from the new world that revolutionized tasty cooking around the world. Before that, the spiciest flavour was black pepper. And the reason why chili peppers took off?Because of their versatility, they were bred to grow in all kinds of conditions. What does this say? Ive heard many times elders refer to whites or non-Natives as our younger brothers or cousins. I can see now how its like waiting for a younger sibling to get it. Brother, your justice system based on judgement and punishment isnt just not working for us, it isnt working for you too. Mono cropping doesnt create beautiful, tasty and resilient foods either. Seeing the earth as something just waiting to be exploited? Nope, thats not going to help our children And grandchildren. While its hard to wake institutions and govts up, Im glad to hear in reports that 3 / 4 of Canadians are worried about the legacy we are leaving coming generations. I just hope our younger brothers and sisters around the world wake up before we do too much damage to our shared home.
