Listening to a course on great books that changed the world while - TopicsExpress

Listening to a course on great books that changed the world while driving today, I was reminded of an English/Literature class at West Minico Jr. High School. Any other WMJH alumnus remember Mrs. Richards and Miss Erickson who team taught that class? Memories of Mark Twains Tom Sawyer, Homers Odyssey, and Dantes Inferno came flooding back. Although I cant remember actually reading Inferno until a later college Western Lit. class, I distinctly remember learning about several levels of hell at West Minico. I remember acting out Tom Sawyers white washing the fence and illustrating scenes from the Odyssey and Inferno. I am so appreciative of teachers like that who helped instill in me my love for literature, reinforced by Mrs. Stephenson in high school when reading Shakespeare (and listening to a dramatization of Julius Ceasar on a record player complete with the crackling sounds from the needle in the grooves.) I should also give a shout out to the elderly Sister Benson (or was it Bennion?) at Ricks College who absolutely adored Shakespeare, teaching me to adore him, too. I still have passages from several different plays - and a sonnet memorized thanks to her. I am so grateful to teachers who teach well, such worthwhile things - simply because they love the subject and know it is important to perpetuate that love. Especially today, when they suffer so much negativity.
