They reveal who I really am, what I hold in my heart, and how I understand my world. True conversation is such a privileged exchange! Yet in most everyday discourse, a key component is often missing: heartfelt listening. Usually when another is speaking, I am busy formulating my next words. As soon as a pause occurs, and sometimes even before, I quickly jump in with my view, my defense, my take on things. I want to be known and understood. I scramble to prevail; my mind races to get my two cents in. What would it be like to truly put aside my need to be witty and interesting? What if I sincerely oriented the conversation towards the other, thoughtfully opening myself to receive what he or she desires to share? Jesus says if you set aside your own agenda, the holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what you should say. Just for today, listen more than you speak. - Jennifer Christ
