Local Nerdiness: Everyone, at least everyone in Cleveland, is familiar with Ian Hunters 1979 song Cleveland Rocks. If your werent familiar with the song before, then you were introduced to it as the theme song for The Drew Carey Show, airing from 1995-2004. But why would Ian Hunter (Mott The Hoople), an Englishman, write a song for Cleveland? While touring the US in 1972, their show at The Music Hall was the first time that Mott The Hoople sold out a club. The acceptance of Glam Rock by Cleveland music fans left a lasting impression on the group. Ian Hunter would later dub Cleveland the coolest place ever! After hearing Cleveland be the butt of many jokes in the media, Hunter felt that his beloved city needed some much needed recognition. The song was originally written for Cleveland, but changed to England Rocks when it was first released in 1977. It was rightfully changed back to Cleveland Rocks in 1979. Neither of the versions were properly released as a single, but the latter is pretty darn popular round these parts. With me, Mott The Hoople has always been one of my favorites....
